Q And As

Here are the latest questions from the Low-Latency.com community e-mail bag, together with some brief answers.  There's an update on Knight Capital, Cisco's new switch (and other switch offerings), Nasdaq OMX's new FPGA data feed, and also the bigger picture on market data rates.

Trading firms - especially those into HFT - are always looking for a technology edge, and customised solutions can provide it. The custom approach is what Fiberblaze specialises in, though that's not stopping it releasing a more generalised product this month. Embracing Altera FPGAs, and opening an office in New York City is also in the plan. Low-Latency.com talked to Fiberblaze's CEO Troels Gert Nielsen to get the scoop.

Continuing the monthly Q&A where I cover some of the questions I get asked as I interact with the Low-Latency.com community ... from Knight Capital to Correlix to wireless.

Transaction Cost Analysis (TCA) is of increasing importance to trading success and while it is very much a business imperative, implementing it and putting it to effective use relies on a combination of low-latency technologies and big data approaches.  Low-Latency.com got the TCA low down from Louis Lovas, director of solutions at OneMarketData.

As trading firms roll out their operations across geographies, connectivity and associated latency considerations move focus from local network fabrics to wide area ones. And that presents many new challenges. Low-Latency.com connected with Gerry Jankauskas, CTO at Bay Microsystems, to find out what part his company plays in the solution.

Latency management specialist Corvil has introduced its Trade Lens functionality, designed to map the technicalities of latency management onto trading business operations. Low-Latency.com spoke to Corvil CEO Donal Byrne to get the details.

Low-latency connectivity continues to be an area of spend for most trading firms, and tapping into far markets is one of the focuses. Low-Latency.com caught up with Jock Percy, CEO of Perseus Telecom, to get some insight into the action.

Happy Insurrection Day! Yep, I am a Brit ... and so I am working today while most of the low-latency community is having a slow day instead. It seemed a good time to kick off a new monthly series where I get to give some opinions and insight into the world of low latency, and the technologies underpinning it, drawing on questions I get asked as I go about my day to day work researching this fascinating topic for Low-Latency.com.  So, here goes ...

FPGAs are growing up and spreading their wings.  Only a couple of years ago, their use for market data handling was considered cutting edge, whereas now it's almost mainstream.  But what about using them for more complex functionality?  Low-Latency.com spoke to NovaSparks CEO Yves Charles on pushing the complexity, and the challenges involved.
